With
more than a passing resemblance to a National Geographic
best-of issue, Zimbabwe is a beautiful and
usually safe country to visit. It boasts the majestic Victoria
Falls, magnificent wildlife preserves and the medieval ruins
of Great Zimbabwe, as well as the bustling
city of Harare. Whether you're lying in a tent listening to
hippos snuffle in the river nearby or shaking your booty at an
all-night percussion jam, there's enough elbow room to raise a
bucket of chibuku to your lips and toast this fascinating
country.
Zimbabwe’s conservation areas offer a wide variety of
contrasting landscapes, ranging from the awe inspiring
Victoria Falls (the countries most famous tourist attraction),
to the woodlands in the west, and the scenic mountains in the
Eastern highlands.
VICTORIA
FALLS. The incredible Victoria Falls is also known as
Mosi- ao- Tunya meaning “The Smoke That Thunders”. It
extends 1 700metres across the Zambezi River and plunges down
108 meters. As you walk through the lush Rain Forest, you are
able to view the falls from numerous points on the edge of the
gorge.
HWANGE
NATIONAL PARK is the countries flagship reserve. It
is home to over30 000 elephants, one of the highest
concentrations in Africa. The reserve extends over 1.4 million
ha of grassy plains, mopane woodlands, and pans - supporting a
wealth of game and prolific bird life. Lion, leopard, wild dog
and spotted hyena flourish here as over 16 antelope species
occur in abundance in the park.
MANA
POOLS NATIONAL PARK offers some of the best game
viewing in Africa, especially between the months of August and
October at the end of the dry season, as it offers the highest
concentration of game in the entire continent. Herds of over
500 buffalo can be seen, as well as large numbers of elephant,
eland, kudu, waterbuck, nyala, impala, zebra, hippo and
crocodile. Many predators are present too, including lion,
leopard, wild dog and spotted hyena.
KARIBA.
Regarded as the “Riviera” of Zimbabwe, Lake Kariba offers
a variety of activities including water skiing, yachting,
canoe safaris, and fishing. Kariba is well know for its tiger
fish which give anglers a good fight - and plenty excitement.
An unforgettable must is a stay on a house boat on Lake Kariba,
and sunset game viewing cruises.
